A successful building project often involves more than one type of engineer. Each engineering discipline focuses on a different part of the building, and understanding their roles can help owners and property managers know who may be needed when a problem develops.
Civil engineers are involved with site development, drainage, utilities, grading, roads, and other infrastructure surrounding a building.
Structural engineers focus on the components that support the building. This includes foundations, beams, columns, walls, framing, and other structural elements. They may be called when there are concerns about cracking, movement, deterioration, or structural damage.
Mechanical engineers work with systems such as air conditioning, ventilation, plumbing, and other mechanical equipment that help keep a building operating properly.
Electrical engineers deal with electrical distribution, lighting, power systems, emergency systems, and other electrical components.
Geotechnical engineers study soil and ground conditions. Their work can be especially important when investigating settlement, foundation movement, slope concerns, or conditions that could affect a building from below.
Some projects may also involve specialized engineers depending on the building and the problem.
Knowing which type of engineer to involve is important. A structural concern requires different expertise than a drainage, electrical, or ventilation problem. Bringing in the appropriate professional helps ensure that the condition is evaluated correctly and that the recommended solution addresses the actual cause.
In construction, the right expertise can make the difference between simply repairing visible damage and solving the problem behind it.
